Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these medications need to be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
