Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
