On his initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an audacious commencement to his administration.

A Historic Leader

The young figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Steering by Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
